tympanostomy tubes. They are given to children with constant ear infections. My daughter had them. She had ear infections so often the scarring could potentially cause hearing loss.

hi audiologist here! in australia at least, no one will put the tubes in a child’s ears without objective testing done to make sure there is a medical need for it. yes, a hearing test can show us if there is a discrepancy between how sound is travelling in through the ears and how its being picked up at the level of the organ itself, but without objective testing of if there is fluid behind the eardrum recurently, tubes would not be put in. this surgery is used to aerate the middle portion of the ear which is especially important for children who are still developing language to make sure they can hear, and so that this doesn’t progress into anything worse both medically and developmentally for language. we can also recognise that asd and apd affect how children respond to sound and speech, but two things can be true at once so it doesn’t negate the fact that if you needed ventilation tubes you would get them

What you’re describing is auditory processing disorder, often comorbid with autism and/or adhd. The frequency of it and ear tubes in these populations may seem larger in comparison to other populations, but there is a bit of a statistical bias with that as well as with the frequency of ear tubes because hearing tests are part of differential diagnosis for conditions like ADHD and ASD

it was for chronic ear infections not for hearing. My brother had the tubes because he had chronic ear infections and had hearing damage from them.

In Australia in order to qualify for funding for supports for ASD they also have to go through hearing, sight and speech assessment to rule those things out. So in Australia it’s more likely to be picked up on hearing problems in children with ASD because they are actually getting tested.

My brother had tubes and is also autistic. we both have auditory processing issues, but I'm a girl, so I never got tested for neurodivergence, just in trouble for "selective hearing".
