9/14 - On September 14, 2026, the Electronic Frontier Foundation published an investigation into Flock Safety, the automated license plate reader network used by police departments across the United States, showing officers routinely typed nonsense into the field where they are supposed to record why they are searching. Recorded reasons included LOL, LMAO, hehe, idk, blah, keyboard mashing like asdfga and ghjkl, insults such as idiot and WEIRD KID, and one entry reading

Recorded reasons included LOL, LMAO, hehe, idk, blah, keyboard mashing like asdfga and ghjkl, insults such as idiot and WEIRD KID, and one entry reading "robbery i don't remember the case number leave me alone". The searches are not small. 404 Media, which also covered the report, noted one search from Lake County, Indiana that reached more than 19,000 cameras across 1,558 cities and towns. EFF documented a single Goshen, Indiana search on May 7, 2025 that queried 6,474 networks covering 82,413 cameras. Flock's response to the sloppy entries, per EFF, was to change the reason field in late 2025 from a free text box to a dropdown menu of prepopulated categories, which EFF describes as a loss for transparency, because the record no longer shows what the officer was actually thinking. Why this matters if you drive a van with your business name on it. Plate readers log where your vehicle was and when, that record is searchable by thousands of outside agencies, and until now the only thing standing between your movements and a curious stranger with a badge was a text box people were filling in with "hehe". This week, look up whether your city has Flock cameras. The contracts are usually public and most people have no idea their town bought in.
