@dr.emily.king: I get this question often as a Catholic veterinarian… so here are my thoughts #veterinarian #vetmed #vettech #spay #catholicism

Not understanding the back lash here. If you don’t like her practices as a vet, see a different one. I have a few questions tho, are u saying if you are mid spay and see a pregnancy and it’s later on do you stop the procedure mid procedure? Or do u mean if you can see the pregnancy is later on (through ultra sound or something) you won’t spay at all? I think this is where the confusion lies in the comments

Spay abort is safe and ethical until birth. There is nothing unCatholic above abortion in ANIMALs

This is not something that I can agree with. thousands of healthy, adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized every single day because of the over population crisis we’re in. Allowing any more puppies or kittens to be born is causing more and more animals to be euthanized.

In my opinion religion has no place in medicine. All patients get the same level and spectrum of care regardless of the situation.

This is disappointing. The mother animal is already sedated, and considering the number of unhoused animals in the world, the spay should happen no matter how far along.

religious beliefs cannot influence someone's ability to practice medicine, that's unprofessional. I will never understand why people would rather have more unwanted puppies with unknown genetics over a spay abort. I think sometimes we need to set aside our personal feelings and stop anthropomorphizing animals. we need to do what is right for the patient and animal welfare as a whole and that includes late-term spay abortions.

We put it in our spay contract, that if the patient is pregnant, we will spay abort. Pregnancy stage shouldn't matter as far as continuing, only matters for post op care. The church doesn't pay vet bills or the care it cost for these animals to be in shelters. The church needs to sit this one out.

Spay-abortions are humane, ethical, and always appropriate in an overpopulation crisis. If GPs decline to perform them, those puppies/kittens often end up in shelters where they may be euthanized for space or placed in unstable homes. There are virtually no situations where allowing an unplanned pregnancy to continue benefits the mother or the offspring. Letting it progress goes against established animal welfare principles.

What about the unnecessary pain caused by overpopulation? I respect you but it’s worth asking.

The realities of the overpopulation situation we’re in require spay abort especially for unplanned/unintentional breedings, even in later stages of pregnancy. That is why we have guidelines for humane euthanasia of fetuses at different gestational ages.

Is this your policy while completing the procedure or the policy of your entire clinic?

@Jennitaylor384 what’s crazy is this isn’t even something the Catholic Church teaches. It has nothing to do with Church teaching. It’s just this vet’s interpretation of what she thinks she should do

Medicine should have nothing to do with religion. It should be about will it be safe. For mom. I rather lose all the puppies/kittens than lose mom.

Thank you for sharing! One thing that confuses me as a new grad during a spay that ends up being pregnant- how long is it safe for the fetuses to be exposed to iso gas without it causing developmental problems? Only asking because we have to go fast for C-sections!!

Like you say “never simple” and “discernment.” What is the difference in euthanizing a dog/cat who can’t find a home in a shelter and “aborting” a litter in utero? More than likely, that little will be in a shelter regardless getting euthanized.

thank you for not hurting the animals once they are developed. shows a true vet that is acting to protect, not just serve.
