@kimcheee19: This is all just my opinion and what I noticed during my two weeks in Japan. It’s also kind of hypothetical because honestly, I’ve seen locals do some of these “don’ts” too. But as a tourist, you definitely get the judging stares if you do them. Not everyone is super friendly or welcoming, and that’s okay — it’s just a different culture. These are the things I picked up and learned along the way! #japanese #japan #toyko
The only thing that I’d argue against is the walking and eating. Most of the locals actually do not care and do the same. The only time it’s kinda enforced is in high touristy areas where they’re afraid of us tossing our trash

I was just there and I occasionally saw Japanese jaywalk. I behaved though.

Tipping is a US/Canadian thing. Its not as forced anywhere in asia, Europe, Australia, etc. So you can apply that rule everywhere else outside US/CAD

About the “no tipping”. I tipped many times and each time, they were so grateful and can’t stop saying thank you. When i tipped some food servers and transportation drivers, they kept thanking me as I walk away. Their eyes lit up and I was also happy to see them happy

I live in Japan and I see netizens often eat whilst walking, talk loud in trains/call in trains (sometimes) all the time. We even jaywalk when the crosswalk is super short and the red light takes forever cus it’s ridiculous to wait forever for a small path

Where can we dispose our trash? Toilet or convenience stores?

I’m so suprised how clean it is despite the lack of public trash bins . I’m from LA and there literally trash everywhere in the cities (dtla is a dump lol) and in residential suburb area) and they have trash bins everywhere . Ironic

Sad that Japan is no longer the same. I just got back from my home yesterday from a month vacation in Japan and I napansin ko na may makalat na kalye and it’s not just like cigarette butts, may mga nakita akong disposable ramen bowls, can of beers, bags of chips, basta madami.

After a couple of trips to Japan, I definitely agree on everything except one. I have indeed seen people (specially salary men) eating while walking. I think its acceptable as long as you don't make a mess or cause any inconvenience to the people around you.
