@westernaf: Imagine… sisters Sabine and Leyla McCalla singing the grand anonymous African-American spiritual of “Deep River” on a cool lite night in New Orleans. Two rare artists that bring the beautiful weight of calm to all who give their ears to it them. Imagine no further. Western AF presents a field recording for the music lovers out there. In this recording, you feel something ancestral. The river becomes a metaphor… a physical thing. The place where you cross over, where you let go, where you remember. A voice cracks, another holds steady. There is silence between lines, and you hear the world around them. Insects, the rustle of cloth, distant voices, that unfortunate car in the background. But it doesn’t take anything away. It adds texture. Overall, the sisters with their a cappella rendition, is almost like a ceremony. You can’t walk away. You lean in, and surrender all. This is what the best of what Leyla and Sabine can do. Not just music, but connection across memory, across siblings, across family. If such a recording like this didn’t exist, I’ll fall down dead. Luckily, my life is saved, if only for a moment. Thank you ladies. -Mike @mdangerv P.S. Selfishly, I would be lying if I didn’t dream of this day. Working with them both was a goal. As it should be of any field recordist. So to all my friends who make these kind of vids, reach out to them. They’re the soul of music and the world needs to hear them.

When Sabine McCalla and any of her kin starts singing, I sit down and listen. Absolutely riveting and beautiful!
