And here's the mistake most people make: They think apologizing harder makes it better. It doesn't. Over-explaining makes you look defensive. Over-apologizing makes it about you. Here's what NOT to say and what to say instead: Don't say: "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean it that way, I would never—" Say: "That came out wrong. What I meant to say was..." You acknowledged the impact without spiraling. "That came out wrong" = you own it without groveling. Then you clarify immediately. Clean correction, no drama. Don't say: "I'm sorry if you were offended." Say: "I'm sorry that wasn't what I intended to communicate." "If you were offended" makes it their problem. "That wasn't what I intended" takes ownership of your words. You separated intent from impact that's emotional intelligence. Don't say: "You know I didn't mean it like that, right?" Say: "I didn't land that well. Let me try again." You didn't ask them to reassure you. You took responsibility and moved forward. "Let me try again" = you're fixing it, not defending it. When you offend someone accidentally, don't make them manage your guilt. Apologize once, clarify fast, move forward.
