As someone who was parentified by an emotionally immature mom - there is a *very* big difference between sharing how something made you feel, and making your kid responsible for managing your emotions. Having an emotional reaction and still holding space for them while you get *yourself* under control and then talking about your feelings, vs being a reactive emotional mess who isn’t able to show up as a parent until the kid calms *you* down.

When I caught my teen sneaking extra money from my wallet, I burst into tears and said, "I trusted you!" It was not on purpose, but I know that it was 1000% more effective than grounding her. It started a conversation that wasn't a power struggle.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I would imagine that it would be okay to say something along the lines of “I’m sorry, I reacted that way because I was very [scared, frustrated, upset, sad, etc.], I was feeling big feelings but I have/will calm myself down/cope/whatever.” Right? Like not “your behaviour made me feel this way” but “I had these feelings, and I will take ownership of them”? I’m still learning all of this stuff from my own childhood but to me that option feels more like modelling that emotions are healthy and okay vs. putting the responsibility of your emotions on the child?

so when it comes to young kids like toddlers, how do you teach them empathy and understanding their words and actions can hurt others while also not conditioning them to think that they’re responsible for other people’s feelings, like esp adults. i’m only 23 and for a long time i said i didn’t want kids but ive kinda changed my mind 😭 im obv not having one any time soon but i worry when that day possibly comes, i feel like i wouldn’t know anything. do parenting classes and books teach about these things, like emotional and behavioral stuff?

Oh this would be an amazing series. As I was watching and you were saying when they’re able to communicate masterfully, I immediately thought- yup so not until they are full grown adults. Your videos are very validating because I have a 5 yo daughter with adhd who is constantly being corrected at school & teachers saying their goal is to have her be conscious of how her actions affect other people. Which I don’t always love

a young child maybe five or six is at least once told by grandmother when you do this it "hurts my heart". judging from your other video this could cause the child to feel responsibility for everyone's feelings. sometime after this the child uses the same phrase with a parent. what if the parent doesn't change stride or expression? assume no yelling or physical violence or anything like that.

We have definitely set boundaries if a behavior is not appropriate or is not tolerated well by others/us or if we think it will be an issue at school. That’s navigating life. Our two boys are also very different and have learned that their behaviors with their friends are sometimes not tolerated by each other or us. We are constantly reminding them there is a time and place for everything. They have also learned to advocate for themselves. Like say, hey, I’m tired can the car ride be quiet. Or I don’t like this conversation/topic, can we talk about something else. I think it’s good. 🤷‍♀️
