I like genki as a beginner ^_^ it’s easy to understand but for preparing for jlpt i need other books to practice like Shinkanzen master :) minna no nihonggo is also good 👍

I use Tobira myself and it works really good. The worksheets can be found on the website so no need to buy the work book.

its essentially built for a professor/teacher to assign and have the student fill out the workbook/practice parts as in class activities with no access to quick answer keys. it has no answers in the back because all those parts are separated into a teacher's guide/workbook answer key for teachers to use. Honestly, I love genki. But I've gotten to experience it in an active classroom, if I hadn't, I likely wouldnt be a fan of how most of the exercises require a partner.

Genki is best used for its intended purpose: it is a school-level textbook, not a JLPT textbook. It’s also best for group settings where you all have to learn one thing at a time.

it's a great resource....when taught by a real person...but I would never attempt it on my own. I'm grateful there's a local organization that offers Japanese courses for adults in my area because self learning is hard! if you have the means to do so I recommend taking actual instructor led classes!

Genki is useful to me and I do actually think it's incredibly helpful...BUT...I'm using it by taking an actual instructor led class with other students... definitely more helpful in that situation. It's expensive but it's so worth having a teacher give you guided homework and group exercises.

I asked hubby to buy me genki textbook and workbook because I used it back in college when I studied Japanese 10yrs ago 😅 Hopefully it is helpful 🫣 There are way too many options I got overwhelmed so I asked him for the one I'm familiar with 🥹

if you get the workbook you get more solo work. I think the idea was that the textbook was for in class and the workbook was for out of class assignments when you dont have other people
