I'm surprised they are suddenly afraid to admit that braille readers don't read books. If you read with your eyes, and listen to - with your ears, then following their logic, blind people touch books. Or pet books?
No wait, "I stroke two books this week." 😆
Also, ask them if an author really even *writes* a book, if they type it on the computer, instead of using pen and paper?

i feel like the people who bash on audiobooks only see a book as a stat that contributes to them “winning” reading. as a blind audiobook reader, thank you for saying this!

3 years ago I hadn’t read a book in years. 2 years ago I read 8 books. 1 year ago listened to 50 books. This year I will finish around 65. I’m gonna get it how I can.

Audiobook hating is crazy to me. Especially because it’s basically a form of storytelling and the way we communicated stories to each other in the past, before books. Plus I can knit or do pottery while I enjoy a book. Win-win

Years later I can’t remember if I read a book or listened to it. The memories are the same.

If listening to it fast is cheating, then if I listen to an audiobook at a slower speed do I get extra credit points?

Reading a book and listening to someone else read the book are just not the same thing. It doesn’t mean you didn’t acquire the knowledge or don’t have excellent comorehension of the material if you listen to an audio book version. I like audio books. But listening to an audio book and reading the book just are not the same thing it’s not hate and it’s not a criticism of anybody’s intellect or comprehension to an express that fact.

I wish I could listen to audiobooks I like CAN NOT listen to audiobooks. It just doesn’t work for me. Even at 3X speed. Sadly, I gotta read it and that’s why I don’t read so many books because I’m always working with my hands.

People conflate the sensory input with the cognitive process of reading, and think reading requires sight because it is the most common sensory input, but sensory input doesn’t dictate if something is reading, comprehension of the text does. When people use their eyes to read a printed book they don’t say they looked at it. Whether visual, audible, or tactile, people get the same information word for word. It is ALL reading.

So if I go to a café for coffee, drink it, enjoy it and leave… I didn’t actually have a coffee because I didn’t make it, pour it and mix it myself?! 😏

ALL OF THIS. Also!! When you read a book with your ears you read ALL of it. When books are read with eyes, words are often lost in the visual process of reading due to decoding skills people have/skipping chunks of words we know to be a pattern, etc.

Writers write for the page, not for 12-hour audio jaunts. Has any text began as an audiobook and then gone to print?

This is akin to people demonizing the use of AAC for nonspeaking folks! - they’re speaking! It’s just augmented!

I hate them because I cannot process them. Audio anything has to be specific to keep my attention. I wish I could listen while I do things, no, zero clue what’s going on. Nothing to do with others 🎉

I have an auditory processing disorder that works EXACTLY THE SAME WAY AS YOURS. I’ve never seen someone else talk about this!!! I can “read” the books physically but I don’t process the information. Or it takes me a MONTH and having to take literal notebooks of notes and details while I read to be able to process it. When I could listen to it and process it in a day or two and learn SO MUCH MORE?!?! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!!!!

I hadn’t read a whole book since high school. Read one physical book that sparked my interest again, i work from home as a mom of 3 so I could listen and didn’t have as much time to sit down and read, I finished 54 audio books since August 🥹 6 physical books and finish around 3 books a week now! It’s made me feel so accomplished and love having a new joy in my life 🫶🏼💕
