Presta valve cap is super helpful for MTB. I have had a rock kick up into my wheel and knicked the tip just enough to bend.

Only keep the caps on for protecting the spare tube when rolled/packed so it doesn’t puncture itself.

I was just typing as you said it, presta can be delicate and I've definitely snapped the tip of one before. the cap imo is mostly to prevent that.
