Solo Cissokho was a renowned Senegalese kora player, singer, storyteller and griot, born in 1963 in Ziguinchor, Casamance, Senegal. He came from a long and respected Mandinka griot family and began learning the 21-string kora at around the age of seven, carrying forward a musical tradition passed down through generations. His career took him from Senegal to France and England before he settled in Norway in 1995, where he became an important figure in the international world-music scene. Solo was celebrated for his mastery of the kora and for bringing together West African traditions with Scandinavian folk, jazz and other world-music influences. He performed and collaborated with numerous musicians, including Ellika Frisell, Touré Kunda, Youssou N’Dour and Ali Farka Touré, and his collaboration with Ellika Frisell received international recognition, including a BBC World Music Award for Boundary Crossing. Through his performances, recordings and collaborations, he helped introduce the rich musical heritage of Senegambia and the wider Mandinka tradition to audiences around the world. Solo Cissokho passed away on 4 May 2019 in Oslo, Norway, aged 56, following a period of illness. May Allah forgive his shortcomings, have mercy upon him, grant him Jannatul Firdaus, and give strength and comfort to his family, friends, fellow musicians and all those who loved his music. May his soul rest in eternal peace. His legacy should be cherished far beyond Senegal alone. Senegambia as a whole Senegal and The Gambia, united by the Mandinka, griot and kora traditions should celebrate and preserve Solo Cissokho’s musical heritage as part of our shared cultural history. His life reminds us that music can cross borders while keeping our ancestral identity alive.
