The Iron Chain Bridge (Chakzampa) and Tiru Dra (“Money Cliff”) of Silung Monastery, Paro In the 14th century, the great master and engineer Drubthob Thangtong Gyalpo is said to have built eight iron chain bridges in Bhutan. One of these was located below Silung Monastery, in a place known as Tiru Dra, or “Money Cliff.” Over time, the bridge was destroyed by floods, and its iron chains sank to the riverbed, where they remained for centuries. With the construction of the Dorsgar Bridge, the Iron Bridge at Tiru Dra was abandoned and left unrepaired. Later Dobji Penlop Banakata gathered local villagers in an attempt to haul the chains from the river and offer them to Silung Monastery. However, their efforts failed. Dobji Penlop Banakata then made offerings and prayers to the monastery’s local deity, Lhamo Remati. It is said that soon after, the “they carried the statue of Drubthob from Silung Monastery to Zhuthri Pang, a place near Tiru Dra, where they offered water and prayed to it. Following this, the villagers were miraculously able to lift the chains with ease. The chains were offered to Silung Monastery along with a golden statue of Thangtong Gyalpo. When the statue was placed in the temple, nectar is said to have miraculously flowed from it, a phenomenon witnessed by many, which greatly strengthened their faith. The ancient iron chains from the 14th-century bridge were preserved at Silung Monastery for generations. In 2005, part of the chains was taken to Tamchog and incorporated into a reconstructed traditional iron bridge, which is now on display for visitors.#bhutan #pilgramage #bhutantiktok #bhutanesemuser #bhutanese
