I was taught that we do the sign of the cross as we pass by a church is because God is literally there inside the church's tabernacle. We cross as a sign of reverence and say a short prayer.

It was really sweet when we were in Western Ukraine, which is largely Catholic, the taxi drivers would cross themselves whenever they drove past a church or even a shrine.

yep, you forgot about the cemetery to them and a prayer. here in Portugal there is a church in every corner imagine me doing that every two minutes. it's in the blood though can't ( not that I want to) change it. 😁
