📍Topkapı Palace – Imperial Treasury, Golden Cradle (18th Century) In the Second Room of the Imperial Treasury, resting in its own glass case, sits an object built not for war or worship but for the first hours of a newborn life — the Golden Cradle of Topkapı Palace, one of the most extraordinary pieces of goldsmithing to survive from the Ottoman court. Its frame is carved walnut, sheathed entirely in gold gilding and lined inside with purple velvet — a base sturdy enough to be carried by hand in procession, yet transformed into something closer to a reliquary. The surface is set with an almost unbelievable density of gems — figures commonly cited put it at roughly 1,475 diamonds, 1,210 rubies, and 520 emeralds studding the frame, with the emeralds and diamonds along the sides cut large and exceptionally clear. The two finial knobs and the carrying handle at either end are each set with their own cluster of eight diamonds, five rubies, and fifteen emeralds. Even the eight small rods used for swaddling the infant — tucked beside the cradle — are jeweled, carrying some 140 diamonds, 132 rubies, and 842 emeralds between them. Over the gold sits a cover of pink and white silk, so thickly sewn with seed pearls that period accounts simply describe them as uncountable. This was not a nursery object gathering dust — it was the centerpiece of the Beşik Alayı, the Ottoman “Cradle Ceremony,” one of the most colorful public rituals in Istanbul. When a royal child was born, the Treasurer would have the cradle prepared and carried in formal procession from the treasury to the birthing chamber, handed over with prayers to the Chief Harem Agha. Word went out to the Şeyhülislam, the viziers, the Janissary commander, and judges across the empire; noblewomen were formally invited to visit and offer congratulations, greeted with sweet sherbets while their gifts were displayed nearby. If the child was a boy, an aigrette — a jeweled plume — was fixed to the cradle to mark it. Sometimes a grand vizier would send his own cradle instead, carried in a separate procession from his residence to the palace. Very few of the cradles made for these ceremonies over the centuries survive — most were eventually dismantled for their stones. That this one endured intact, kept safeguarded in the Treasury precisely because of its value, is why it still greets visitors today as, in effect, a treasury in miniature. #hasekizasultan #topkapipalace #ottomanempire #foryoupage #foryou
