The M1128 Mobile Gun System (MGS) is an eight-wheeled armored assault gun of the Stryker family that was used by the U.S. Army. It mounts a 105 mm M68A1E4 rifled tank gun inside a low-profile, remote-controlled turret onto a modified Stryker chassis. Key Specifications & Design - Primary Role: Developed by General Dynamics Land Systems, the M1128 was designed to provide rapid, direct fire support for dismounted infantry within Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs). It targeted bunkers, fortified positions, and sniper nests rather than acting as a frontline main battle tank. Armament: Its 105 mm cannon utilizes an automatic reloading system. The autoloader holds 8 ready-rounds, backed by a 10-round replenishment drum in the rear hull. It primarily fired high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT), canister, and kinetic energy penetrator rounds. Mobility: Powered by a 350 hp engine, it could reach road speeds up to 60 mph (96 km/h). It was built to bridge the gap between heavy tracked armor and light infantry. Operational Challenges & Retirement - Despite its firepower, the M1128 MGS had a troubled operational history and was completely retired from active service in late 2022. The main factors leading to its phase-out included: Autoloader Issues: The highly complex automated loading system was notoriously unreliable, suffered frequent jams, and was expensive to maintain. Crew Ergonomics & Safety: Clearing a misfired round required the crew to exit the armored hull and physically access the exterior turret. Design Flaws: The heavy turret gave the wheeled platform a high centre of gravity, causing rollover risks. Furthermore, the vehicle lacked an integrated double-V hull to adequately protect against IEDs and mines. #m1128stryker #generaldynamicslandsystems #GMDefense #fyp #edit
