My dog is uncomfortable just being alive sometimes so I do consent tests all the time. Unfortunately she doesn’t gently put her head under my hand, she whips it back into my face as hard as possible. Or she straight up smacks me with her paw.

i love the idea of consent tests. i did them before knowing what they were. since my dog was a puppy whenever playing tug of war, i would let go and keep my hand open to see if he pushed the toy back into my hand or if he was done.

I do so many consent tests with my rescue Doberman girl. She is very aggressive in telling me she wants pets when she wants them 😆 But she also has some issues with people leaning over her or touching her belly so I always check with her to make sure it’s what she wants.

I am so lucky that my dog is Unsubtle about asking me to continue pets if I stop. She taps my hand with her paw like “um, sir, *I* was not done”

Also something people forget: it’s not always so black and white as a “yes” or “no”. A dog can really want to be petted and opt in to consent testing, but still experience a lot of internal conflict due to eg physical discomfort

when my dog starts lip licking and yawning and i stop, he doesnt push his head into my hand but he does suddenly lift his head and look at me, almost confused. is he telling me to keep going? or is he done?

So glad you talked about this, both my dogs confuse me all the time with their mixed signals, my eldest even tucks his tail between his legs then will often sit on my lap and nudge my hand if I stop

my dog always demands pets. always. i have to say no, not now. putting on my boots? that seems like the ideal time for pets. wanting to Watch TikTok? not allowed when he is awake. cooking? not even for him, do that while he's asleep and GIVE PETS NOW

I have a golden and an Aussie puppy, I can generally tell they want affection when the press their entire bodies up against me so tightly because that’s as close as they can get to crawling inside of my skin (which they are very sad they cannot in fact do)
