My grandmother was a switchboard operator in the 40s. She wore roller skates to get the job done faster. This is also how she met her best friend who introduced her to my granddad. So I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her switchboard operator job!

My grandmother was a switchboard operator for an army base. Watching her work was fascinating. She worked there for over 40 years.

When new technology is invented, certain jobs disappear. Everyone flipping out over AI potentially replacing jobs, but that’s literally just how it goes and can be seen throughout history. New jobs will be created and certain jobs will be outdated and disappear.

I work in the call center for my job and people in the building still refer to us as "the switchboard". Really cool carryover from decades ago when they first hired people for our job!

Imagine if they’d bring back all the customer service jobs they’ve outsourced to India🙄 the fact that so many jobs are outsourced is what’s ruined the American dream tbh

My mom was an operator!! She said if it wasn't busy she could say the telephone company's full name, but when it was busy, she had to go fast, and she couldn't say the whole name. This was in Brooklyn,New York.

In the very early 2000’s I dialed an operator. Wasn’t common as we had phone books but I thought it was an interesting concept as a small kid with my family’s rotary phone🥹 keep in mind I’m only 26
