When you get your bill. You must call and ask them for an itemized bill. You say you want to see all the charges. Once they hear that they tend to knock some money off. Plus- ask if there is any type of discount for self pay.

Go with the financial assistance option before looking into cobra. Usually cobra is way more than the self pay charges will be!

Self pay is usually way way cheaper than having insurance. You can also set up a payment plan, even $1/month prevents them from being able to turn it over to collections.

We filled out one of those for my mom because she's very low income and they reduced it by quite a bit and gave her a payment plan.

You can ask for a social worker to see if they can sign you up for Medicaid. If not, you can ask for a hardship to lower the bill.

Every hospital is considered and “charitable organization” they are required to give you a self pay discount and offer payment plans according to your income. Also, medical “debt” is not allowed on your credit report.

Being unemployed right now is better for that. Call the billing department, tell them you’re unemployed and ask for assistance on it

My brother had an emergency gallbladder surgery, that was one week after he arrived to the states as a permanent resident. He has no job, and was living with me. We applied for financial assistance and didn’t pay a dime.
