As a person with adhd my theory on coffee is that even though it doesn’t work the way we want it to, we are TRYING to self medicate with it. We see the rest of society using coffee for a little get up and go and we just desperately want to be able to go do the thing, so we down a coffee with a couple tabs of NoDoze and tell ourselves it’s going to help. These days I have a very strict 2 cup limit for my am coffee, but whooooo boy did I used to consume insane amounts of caffeine

as a brain development specialist and an ADHD adult, the use of caffeine & TH-C helps quiet the brain of the consistent running thoughts, does nothing for focus or attention but helps our nervous system relax, helps our constant negative thought process to slow down enough so we are not “hear” the constant negative feedback loop that we repeat to ourselves constantly

When my adhd was finally medicated, I quit smoking cigs literally without even trying. My doctor said it's super common because a lot of us mistake our lack of impulse control for addiction before it actually gets to the point of addiction. Really interesting

Sorry if you already covered this, but I am intrigued with how GLP-1s affect the dopamine system and ADHD. Because of my stage in life, it's hard to tease out what's ADHD, perimenopause, or medication. But my focus and cognition feel better on glp1

I work with students who have adhd. the caffeine calms them down, Ive seen it for years. many teachers joke that we could diagnose adhd by giving a kindergarten class coffee and seeing which kids dont get hyper and energized.

I have a theory that people with adhd experience m*lly come downs differently than neurotypical people, that the come down is a qualitatively neutral to positive emotional experience. I believe this theory for ~reasons

I don't drink because I keep drinking until I black out and do bad things. My life stays normal if I do not drink at all. I could derail my whole life in a night. I used to drink so I would want to chat and be perceived as normal. I don't care if someone doesn't like me now.

ADHD girlie here: I act the same with and without alcohol. I'm just as impulsive and wild at a party sober. no inhibitions to overcome. alcohol does make my depression way worse though, so I don't drink at all.

Agree to disagree: 20 plus years ago people abused opiates more than others bc of availability. The fedex man would drop by and we’d be cleaning like on stims. You don’t get pills by mail like we used to. The opioid epidemic affects this greatly imo.

Your missing the AuDHD link with autism. AuDHD has a warped worrier gene that pulls us to alcoholism

as soon as speed touched my nose when I was 18, I knew if I did it again I'd be gone. I got diagnosed with ADHD when I was 34 and I understood why I walked away from speed. you have helped me understand me a lot more, thank you.

I will have a cup of coffee at night if I can't settle my mind or if I feel like i can't regulate anything I'm trying to do (eating, focusing, memory etc...I call it spiraling). A cup of coffee settles me much better than melatonin (which has never worked at any amount). I'll also have a really strong cup of coffee if I'm angry or really upset. Coffee just seems to settle me... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tbh I drink coffee to relax, however when I drink a LOT of coffee (this once I was in instant coffee taste study) it does seem to stimulate rather than subdue my brain.

As a 60 year old woman with ADHD, I think the hyperactive component is often misunderstood. For me it’s an inability to be still. It’s mostly just a constant internal dialogue and bodily restlessness. All of that is exhausting so stimulants are appealing because they can stop that process and give you energy which is great because you are tired from all the ADHD symptoms that are present

Caffeine slows my brain down. It helps. Not sure if that's true for others with ADHD, but that's why I consume so much of it.

I slowly sip coffee or energy drinks throughout the day. I’m unmedicated and it 100% helps me focus and prevents time blindness with my work

That’s funny cause when I would try stimulants I’d be like this is doing nothing for me so why would I do it. It’s why I enjoy 🌱 because I feel it slows my brain, stimulants make me want to do work. Caffeine makes me jittery or sleepy or it does nothing and it changes every time so I avoid it

Thoughts on caffeine based: anecdotally, I experienced intense daytime sleepiness pre-medication and ADHD and insomnia is infamously linked. My guess is, despite caffeine worsening ADHD symptoms, the energy it gives increases their feeling of well-being from overriding the lack of sleep, which leads people to view their symptoms more positively
