i think the biggest thing that i’m keeping in mind is that she didn’t start out as an author. she started as a social media influencer, which means engaging with her audience directly was VITAL, and i don’t know if she truly knew the etiquette would be so different once she became an author.

It bothered me so much to see a person who openly speaks about the struggles of being in the autism spectrum being villainized for not following an “unspoken rule”. Maybe if she had been rude but she handled it so thoughtfully. I get people may have an opinion and a preference, but acting like she crossed a line is way out of proportion.

I think where this “etiquette” rule came from was an author a few years ago was getting destroyed in reviews for a poorly written book and she was arguing and fighting with her readers. What Elyse did was not that, nor do I think she overstepped at all.

One of the reasons authors stay out of readers spaces is so there can be discourse and critique. Same way a director is not going to try to come online and interact with movie goers. Once I became published I stopped reviewing and interacting in those spaces. Def think she didn’t know, but someone (her publicist perhaps) should have told her.

Okay but people understand that if you put things on social media, other people can see it right??? Social media isn’t a reader’s space. Goodreads is a reader’s space. Also, Elyse’s response isn’t the problem. The problem are the people on the internet who couldn’t mind their business. Also, she’s not responsible for what her crazy fans do. It’s not a rule in booktok. It supersedes the booktok world. It’s not new. Reader spaces are for readers. Her followers now putting the reviewer in an awkward spot is exactly why it’s a rule.

Authors who comment on reviews are put often lambasted for this. Although Elyse’s response was very kind, she should be treated the same as any other author. It’s not an honest review of work if you’re afraid of 7 million people coming after you for a personal opinion, ya know?

I think the internet is a free space- for everyone. Authors aren’t almighty gods that need to separate themselves from the public. Engaging in a polite conversation should not be policed!

This discourse is baffling to me. The internet is not exclusively "the reader's space." I understand a faux pas if she was on Goodreads or Reddit actively responding to reviews, but engaging with a public post on a social media site seems different. If a restaurant saw a post about poor service, and offered to comp the poster's bill, we would laud that as good customer service.

It’s pretty well known. The power differential is huge, right? Authors who do this on goodreads get raked over the coals for it. Pushing back on reader opinion is a faux pas. Agree that it’s not necessarily intuitive, but I think someone on her team should’ve given Elise a heads up. I don’t think she meant harm by it. Reviews are for readers. If they tag the author, that’s a different story, imo. 🙂
