I would rather be called a technician because it’s not in the back yard anymore. I guess a network problem can go to a mechanic

The easiest way (in my opinion) to tell people the difference between technicians and mechanics is mechanics replace bad parts, and techs can tell you why it failed and replace them. (Without getting into crazy definitions)

mechanic = mechanical. Your mechanic comes with parts and tools.
technician = technical. Your tech comes with a laptop and tools. Parts come separately they will cost to much and arrive late. I hope this helps.

To a tech is someone that would rebuild a carburetor. A mechanic would say it needs replaced. Then there’s the parts replacer that would say it needs a new engine because they don’t know what a carburetor does.

A technician will got through setting up the multimeter for an amperage draw test, look up tsb, pull up a wiring diagram all to finally turn off the light that the mechanic saw while test driving the car.

I’ll throw an even bigger annoyance for me at you. How come doctors get to “practice”, but we (mechanics/techs) have to get it right on the first time? I had one doctor tell me that his patients (pediatrics) couldn’t tell him what was wrong so that’s why he get to “practice”. I said yeah well the engine I’m working on can’t tell me what’s wrong either but I don’t get to practice
