@lagerstatte: While leading a class on wetland ecology in Queens, NY, I had a chance encounter with an American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus)! The largest frog species in North America, bullfrogs are named for their deep calls that echoes across wetlands in summer and sound kind-of like dying cows. Found in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams, bullfrogs are powerful jumpers and opportunistic predators, eating ANYTHING they can fit in their mouths including insects, fish, other frogs, and even small mammals! Here, I teach my students about the frog’s tympanums (ears) which vary in size between males and females. This difference in features between the sexes is known as sexual dimorphism- many species exhibit such differences! #bullfrog #wetlands #environment #wildlife #nature
