Why wouldn’t you recommend the native pinyon pine? Pinus remota. Afghan pine isn’t even from this continent.

Italian stone pines are the most common around here. I try to plant native species though thankfully most pines aren’t really invasive at all.

Mexico has the largest number of pine species in the world. I'm sure there's several Native species that can be a better choice.
