@noelledavidgekirk: I was in a relationship for 27 years and married for nearly 25 and have a few regrets. If I could go back, there are definitely things I would do differently now. #divorce #separation #genx

Why did you ever quit your career? I'm your age and my Mom instructed from day one that I would go to college/grad school and be able to financially support myself. She was from the Silent Generation and did the same. I'm shocked at women who didn't take care of themselves. As an attorney, this is why you never become a SAHM.

I hope you got spousal support. My husband divorced me suddenly after our youngest went to college. I’ve always worked part time. Currently, at an adorable preschool. I’m 53. Our kids are now 21 & 27. It gets better. I am starting to look for a more robust job with more hours & health insurance. (Even though I LOVE my job.) I’m worried that at my age, I’m not going to find anything. I’ve done a ton of jobs, not for profit work, development, community relations, managed a store… but nothing over 30 hours a week.

When you’re young and first married, it seems like a good idea to let the man either make the money and stay home to take care of your kids. This could not be further from the truth. Get your degree, get a job, and be the best parent that you can.

being a sahm was the biggest mistake. Even though I did eventually graduate with a bach, I am so far behind in work experience I can't find a job. Totally financially dependent.

Doesn’t he have to pay you spousal allowance and you get half of everything even his pension, RRSP, etc

I was married 39 years, gave up my career to follow my husband, moving every few years so he could advance his career and one month before our 39th wedding anniversary, he asked for a divorce. Now at 63, I am looking for a job so I don’t have to drain my savings.

I earned my own money and was the primary breadwinner. He cheated and left and I had to give him half of everything including my hard earned retirement.

I made sure my daughter understood that no one goes into a relationship thinking it’s going to end, so just incase, make sure to be financially good and that if things do end, you’re good financially.

Raise daughters to get an education to be self sufficient. Not marriage as a goal.

I’ve been married 27 years together 34 years. Contemplating divorce I was sahm for over ten decades the only reason I’m still here is money and I can’t find a full time job that will pay. Two decades of emotional verbal abuse mocking he left our bedroom 20 years ago blamed me for needing surgery and the latest I was told not by him he was going strip clubs without my knowledge for 15 YEARS! I have one regret I WISH I would of realized that when a man disrespects you it does not get better or go away

Hopefully you get what you deserve with regard to assets and alimony. You have the memories and love from being with your kids and that, at the end, is what matters most.

On the flip side being the primary breadwinner as a woman also comes w its own set of issues. I have told my girls don’t marry someone who doesn’t make at least as much money as you.

I am divorced 52 and am the breadwinner and had to pay the ex half my retirement and child support. It sucks either way. Still rebuilding financially
