@gingerfootgarden: It was tough to narrow down the number of tomato plants I grew this year, but I’m glad I tried proper spacing because the results were incredible. Last year, I spaced them only about 12 inches apart in my @Vego Garden, and before that, I was growing them in buckets. This season, I gave each plant 18 to 24 inches of space—and even though I grew fewer varieties, every single plant produced twice as much, if not more, than what I usually harvest when planting them close together. In my opinion, there’s no strict right or wrong way to space your tomatoes—it really comes down to your goals. If you love trying different varieties, tighter spacing may give you more plants to experiment with, even if the yields are smaller. But if your goal is to maximize production from each plant, then proper spacing can make all the difference. And it wasn’t just the tomatoes. My beans and bittermelon went above and beyond this year—I harvested so much that even after preserving and giving plenty away, I still had extras.
