The Staten Island Ferry is free and you can see the Statue of Liberty from it. I did that on my first trip to NYC too. It's funny because like 70% of the people on the ferry turn around immediately to get back on because they just did it to see the Statue.

People have to understand that there's a BIG DIFFERENCE between saying "We went to Staten Island" and "we rode on the Staten Island Ferry". I'm not even from New York and even I know that....largely because I've done that. Rode on the ferry. It was fun.
