Nobody expects another person to move through an entire relationship without ever making a mistake. You’re going to say the wrong thing sometimes. You’re going to misunderstand each other, forget something important, make a selfish decision, or handle a situation badly. That’s being human. What changes everything is what happens after the mistake. Can you actually look at what you did and say, “Yeah, I understand why that hurt you. I shouldn’t have done that”? Or does the conversation immediately become about how the other person reacted? Because there’s something incredibly frustrating about confronting somebody over something they did and somehow leaving the conversation defending yourself. 😭 You bring up the lie, and suddenly the problem is your tone. You explain why something hurt you, and now you’re being called dramatic. You ask why a boundary was crossed, and somehow the entire conversation becomes about the fact that you got angry when you discovered it. That doesn’t mean every reaction is automatically justified just because somebody else did something wrong first. If you respond cruelly, disrespectfully, or disproportionately, you’re still responsible for that. Two people can owe each other accountability at the same time. But accountability requires keeping cause and effect in the correct order. Your reaction can deserve its own conversation without being used to erase the behavior that triggered it. That’s the distinction. Healthy conflict sounds more like, “What I did was wrong, and I understand why you were upset. I also want to talk about how we handled the argument.” Both things can be addressed without one being used as an escape hatch from the other. And honestly, people become much easier to forgive when they stop making you fight just to get them to acknowledge what happened. A sincere apology lowers defenses because you no longer have to prove your pain deserves recognition. Nobody needs perfection. What people need is someone capable of saying, I did that. It affected you. I understand why. I’m going to work on it. Because mistakes don’t necessarily destroy trust. Sometimes it’s the refusal to take responsibility for them that does.
