@vintagehollywoodstars: The U.S. Government stepped in and asked actress Veronica Lake change her hairstyle. Her famous peek-a-boo hairstyle was accidentally created in 1941 when her natural wave fell over her eye during a rehearsal, and it quickly became her trademark. The hairstyle was widely emulated by women across the nation and made her a major pin-up icon for soldiers during the war. However, the style posed a significant safety risk for women working in factories during World War II, where their long hair could get caught in machinery. In 1943, when the government asked Veronica to change her hairstyle to set an example for women in war industries, she filmed this video which showed she changed to a more practical hairstyle, which included the “victory roll,” a style that was safer and was named to promote “victory”.
