I played both. Tennis varsity and pickleball professionally. Although the concept is the same the nuances are different. And tennis being a lot more physically active and require a lot more training to be good at. So its easy to switch over from tennis to pickleball. But i will also leave it at this. Tennis players cannot compete at top level pickleball divisions unless they trained for it specifically. Most D1 tennis players take over a year to hit the pro league and most don’t do as well as you expect. I am a 5’3 asian man weighing in at 120. I can play and beat D1 tennis players that are 6’0+ 180+ pure muscle. I think its just people aren’t as good at pickleball as they think they are. Until you’re 4.5 you’re not even forcing mistakes yet. You just pray that you don’t mess up and your opponent does. When you get really good, tennis players become a game of figuring out what they don’t like. If they like they drive don’t hit to their drive, they’ll have a side they prefer (forehand vs backhand), they’re movement patterns. You can catch a lot of tennis players short and roll to their hip. But again stuff like this is high advanced skill.

Think of it like this: a good chess player going to play checkers, and a good checkers player going to play chess.

Mathematically speaking it’s just a question of degrees of freedom/margin for error and versatility. This is why tennis players can pick up just about any racket sport and play decently but it won’t go vice versa

the mechanics of pickleball vary, it’s only when you get to 4.5+ or even 5.0, that’s when you know in pickleball how to properly drive and hit twoey

as a tennis player, I'm dumbfounded and jealous of how the pickleball player has a swinging forehand volley, short backswings (if any), etc. I'm learning pickleball and there are many aspects at odds with my tennis instincts. both games are fun, but the pickleball court seems like a happier place

Pickleball is more closely related to ping pong and badminton than tennis. We need to stop comparing tennis and pickleball to eachother.

Its because the body mechanics of tennis are full body, utilizing the entire kinetic chain from the balls of the feet up through the legs and spine to the arms. A tennis player knows how to coordinate the full body and control the swing mechanics to brush the ball properly to spin it with the arc trajectory of their swing. That starts at rhe feet.
