Retired Major League Baseball player Scott Erickson testified on Friday that he feels "really terrible what's happened" and believes if he had "somehow been able to stop" he "probably" could've saved Mark and Jacob Iskander's lives. "I feel really bad about my actions and some of the terrible behavior I did, and not being very honest," Erickson said during questioning from his lawyer Jeff Braun. "I truly believe that now that if I would have somehow been able to stop, I probably could have possibly save their lives. That's a hard thing to live with," Erickson said. Erickson was speeding in a separate vehicle near his girlfriend Rebecca Grossman when Grossman struck the Iskander brothers as they were in a marked crosswalk with their mother and younger brother near Westlake Village, California, on Sept. 29, 2020. Both Erickson and Grossman had been drinking alcohol, and witnesses said they appeared to be racing their Mercedes-Benz AMGs at high rates of speed. Grossman, now 62, is serving 15 years to life in prison; prosecutors dismissed a misdemeanor reckless driving charge against Erickson after he recorded a public service announcement about safe driving with Grossman's help. A jury in Nancy and Karim Iskander's wrongful death lawsuit on June 2 found Grossman and Erickson each liable for $176 million in compensatory damages: $8 million for past damages and $51 million for future damages for Mark, $6 million and $42 million for future for Jacob, $10 million to Nancy Iskander for past emotional distress and $25 million for future, and $6 million for past emotional distress and $28 million for future to younger brother Zachary Iskander. Jurors agreed Grossman and Erickson acted with malice or oppression, which opens them to possible punitive damages. Erickson took the witness stand again on Friday (June 5) and answered questions as well as his stated remorse for what happened. In re-direct , the Iskanders' lawyer Brian Panish asked Erickson, "In the six years that you felt terrible, how do you think the family was feeling?" Judge Huey Cotton overruled Braun's argumentative objection and Erickson answered, "It's heartbreaking and devastating, I'm sure, and obviously a loss that could never be fixed." #law #court
