doesn't everyone just learn the c major scale in those 5 shapes though? never understood the point of the caged system. people only ever really play the e shape and a shape as chords. and it doesn't really seem to work for arpeggios a either as it's not the full shapes?

It gets harder when you try to play the chord tones. That’s where arpeggios come in.

You still have to emphasize arpeggiated notes for every chord in the progression.

I’m from the old school and if you notice , Segovia, Wes Montgomery , Joe Pass , John Williams , Sabicas , they play horizontally across the guitar , unlike the vertical players ( blues box players ) actually some metal speedsters play vertically also !
