Do you recommend going to grad school for social work or clinical psych. Everyone is telling me that a masters in clinical psych is useless unless you want to work under someones name and with a MSW you can open your own practice

As a counseling psych PhD student I’ve been waiting for this one!! I definitely agree with these points generally, but I would add that we are trained in the scientist practitioner model as well and that there is “evidence” for the things we do. e.g. research on multiculturalism and the common factors model of therapy. I personally think of the distinction as generally deficits focused (medical model) vs strengths based.

hiii!! i loveee i-o psych but i also love counseling psych. im planning to get my masters in io psychology but some voice in my head is also telling me to also get a masters in counseling psych after finishing that. i know it takes a lot of time and costs a lot but i would love to know what you think. <3

it would be important to hightlight that counselling psychologist emphasises the therapeutic relationship, personal meaning, and the client’s subjective experience.and it draws on integrative or pluralistic approaches as well as CBT. it would also be important if u had highlighted that counselling psychologist will be able to diagnose by taking further training such as autism.adhd.eupd . cognitive assessment once.qualified. also clinical psychologists are more recruited within CAHMS settings (one example).

I’ve noticed recently a lot more overlap in practicum, internship, and fellowship applications from all sorts of programs! Clinical, school, counseling… I also noticed some school and counseling programs now offer “health” rotations to help people get into academic medical centers! So you’ll be able to get solid training across the board if you seek out appropriate prac experiences 🤓

I have my Master’s in Human Factors but am currently in a Master’s program for Applied Behavior Analysis. I’m aiming to be a BCBA and a psychologist (primarily wanting to assess and diagnose).
