This is what it looked like on morning of Oct 23, on a 5.2 ft high tide. Not a storm. No Swell, Not a king tide. Just a Friday. Three swells in six weeks took the beach. #Hurricane Marie’s swell over #LaborDay weekend, Hurricane Polo’s at the end of September, then Tropical Storm Rachel’s from Oct 8 to 11. Around 3:30 am on Oct 9 the water broke through the timber bulkhead between 64th and 66th and ran into the streets. As of the city’s Oct 16 update: 7 buildings red-tagged, 12 families out of their homes, 2 more yellow-tagged. No injuries. The boardwalk, 1920s wood, the last one like it in #LACounty, is gone between 64th and 66th and buried under sand in other stretches. None of this is new. The city has spent $1 to $1.5 million a year pushing sand around this beach for years. The last real sand fill washed away decades ago. Every big one since the 1940s has.
