A California woman who's in prison for killing two boys while speeding in her SUV was driving 73 mph when she struck the boys in a marked crosswalk in a 45 mph zone, a crash investigator testified on Friday. Rebecca Grossman's Mercedes SUV reached 81 mph three seconds before the crash, and she applied her brakes 1.5 seconds before but not at the moment of impact, said Michael Hale, an investigator in the Orange County District Attorney's Office's vehicular homicide unit. Hale testified as the first witness in a trial over a wrongful death lawsuit brought against Grossman, her husband, Peter Grossman; and her ex-boyfriend Scott Erickson, who was speeding alongside her in another SUV when she struck Mark Iskander, 11, and Jacob Iskander, 8, on Sept. 29, 2020, near Westlake Village in west Los Angeles County. A jury in 2024 convicted Grossman, now 62, of five crimes, including two counts of second-degree murder, and a judge sentenced her to 15 years to life in prison. Hale is a veteran crash reconstruction investigator who testified he's investigated "more than or greater than 7,500 collisions" in 31 years, "more than 500 of those have been fatalities. Attorney Andrew Owen, who represents the boys' parents, asked Hale to describe Grossman's braking. "It was light braking. The brakes were only applied for one second, from minus 1.5 to minus point five and then released," Hale said. "And so at the point of impact, were the brakes being applied at all?" Owen asked. "No," Hale answered. Earlier in the exam, Owen asked Hale if he believes his analysis "with an open mind" and "without any predetermined conclusions." "I'm absolutely certain that I did," Hale said. You know the testimony is critical when the defense objects to anything they can think of like Grossman's lawyer Esther Holm did here. Judge Huey Cotton overruled all but a foundation objection to the 73 mph on impact conclusion, so Owen questioned Hale about his process and tried again, and the judge allowed the testimony.
