There is a softness in Islam that people rarely talk about. A tenderness. A quiet justice. One of the most beautiful examples of this is how Islam honors a mother’s body, her time, and her sacrifice — even in something as intimate as breastfeeding. In Islam, breastfeeding is not treated as an automatic unpaid duty forced upon a woman. It is recognized as labor. Sacred labor. And because of that, a woman has the right to be financially compensated by her husband for nursing their child. Yes. You read that correctly. Allah says in the Qur’an: “Mothers may breastfeed their children for two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing period… And upon the father is their provision and clothing according to what is acceptable.” — Qur’an 2:233 Classical scholars explained that this verse establishes that the financial responsibility lies on the father. If the parents separate, the verse continues to clarify that the father must pay the mother for breastfeeding: “If they both decide on weaning through mutual consent and consultation, there is no blame upon them. And if you wish to have your children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon you as long as you give payment according to what is acceptable.” — Qur’an 2:233 In another verse, Allah says: “Then if they breastfeed for you, give them their payment.” — Qur’an 65:6 Notice something powerful: Allah explicitly uses the word payment. Compensation. Wages. The scholars of fiqh, including the majority (Hanafi, Shafi’i, and Hanbali positions), held that if a woman is divorced, she is entitled to payment for breastfeeding. Even within marriage, many scholars state that if she requests compensation, she has the right to it — because breastfeeding is not legally obligatory upon her in the same way financial provision is obligatory upon the father. Let that sink in.
