Born in Queens, New York, Darling was raised by her mother following her parents' divorce. She spent hours watching and studying old movies on TV, impersonating her favorite actresses. This behavior made her an outcast, even in her own home, where her mother confronted her over rumors that she wore women's clothes; rumors she did not deny. Darling's filmography includes roles in "Flesh" (1968), "Women in Revolt" (1971), "Klute" (1971), and "The Death of Maria Malibran" (1972). She also appeared in Werner Schroeter's "The Death of Maria Malibran" (1972). Beyond film, Darling was a muse for the Velvet Underground, inspiring their song "Candy Says." Her influence extended into literature and art; her diaries and letters were posthumously published in "My Face for the World to See," offering insight into her life and thoughts.
