What looked to others like a pointless, silly discussion of routine matters was, for them, a way of creating their own form of communication - one inaccessible to any outside mind. This communication, a language they constructed in such a short span of time, is not just a reflection of their high intellect. It is also a demonstration that in a world where they are both outsiders, they still possess a connection of their own. By their mere existence, they seem to anchor each other to this world. For Dazai, Fyodor’s existence is like a living reminder that he is not the only one isolated from society because of his intellect - not the only one forced to carry the burden of his perception. And this works both ways. For Fyodor, Dazai is like a counterpart - not a half that fills gaps and weaknesses, but one that illuminates them, opens his eyes to them.
