@thecuriousmaverick: Meet Reshma Saujani. When she visited schools for campaigns, she noticed how in most computer classes, there were barely any girls. She knew this wasn’t a lack of interest, tech was simply never encouraged for girls at that time. But Reshma grew up seeing how tech changed lives through her father, who was an engineer. So she decided to do something about it. In 2012, with no coding background, she started Girls Who Code with 20 girls in a borrowed conference room in New York. It wasn’t easy. Schools didn’t take it seriously. Parents weren’t convinced it was a “real” career path. Companies praised the idea but refused to fund it. But that didn’t stop her. She refined the program, built a curriculum from scratch, brought in volunteer engineers to teach, added real projects the girls could build, and focused on confidence along with coding. Slowly, the results showed. The girls were building apps, websites and tech projects that actually worked and many continued with tech. They were also choosing computer science in college at 15–16× the US average, This made companies realise GWC wasn’t charity but a future talent pipeline. Then schools, partnerships and funding also came in. GWC scaled across the US and then globally, now reaching 600,000+ girls. All because Reshma did something about what bothered her without sitting in her failure after a couple of losses.
