Winter at Felidae has its own special rhythm. The cold mornings are slow, but as soon as the sun starts warming the veld, you’ll find our animals searching for the perfect spot to soak up every ray. Today, that spot belonged to Brutis. Stretched out in the sunshine, completely relaxed, he looked more like a giant house cat than one of Africa’s most powerful predators. Every now and then, he’d lift his head, let out an enormous yawn, and then settle right back into his winter sunbathing session. That yawn might look like he’s showing off his impressive teeth, but lions yawn for many of the same reasons we do. Yawning can help them transition between periods of rest and activity, stretch their jaw muscles, and even communicate their mood to other lions nearby. Brutis has reached an age where he knows how to enjoy the simple things in life. No need to patrol, no need to impress anyone—just a warm patch of winter sunshine and a peaceful afternoon. It’s moments like these that remind me that conservation isn’t only about the exciting encounters.
