@thegirderclub: The Kettenkrad: half motorcycle, half tractor. The Ketternkrad was a unique and compact German military vehicle from WWII that combined a motorcycle-style front end with a tracked rear drive. This combination gave the vehicle great capability on rough terrain. The Kettenkrad was produced by NSU and was intended for airborne troops as it was small enough to slide into the Junkers Ju 52 aircraft. It soon became used for towing equipment, laying cables, and navigating rough terrain where normal motorcycles or trucks had problems. It was powered by a 1478cc 4 cylinder Opel engine - this was enough to comply with the commission which required it to climb a 24 degree gradient in sand and even steeper gradients on firm ground, and it quite happily could chug through water almost half a metre deep. Its unique hybrid design of the Kettenkrad made it one of the most versatile and distinctive utility vehicles of the war.
