Melungeons are probably what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke. They moved inland & integrated with the natives. Later they welcomed other races as they arrived too since they already had been welcomed themselves.

There are more classic surnames then that, I don't remeber them all, but the Sisemores are from Kentucky. We were white passing by the mid 1850s, but we have Native DNA and historical records describing my ancestors as blue eyed Indians, "Wild men" etc.

I’m fascinated. My grandmother was always told she was German and Native American, but I have zero native DNA. My ancestors are all from Appalachia (both sides) and one old photo I found of my great great grandparents… gma (Kentucky born) looks very melungeon and gpa (Oklahoma born in Creek territory) definitely a white man.

My grandma grew up in north East Tennessee. The road In front of her house was the state line between Tennessee and Virginia. This is my grandma with her parents. My grandma really didn’t talk about any family history

My mom grew up in a coal mining township in Virginia and told me a story growing up about how she had a high school class assignment to create a family tree and the questions she asked her family members to answer got her beat with a belt 😭 she always thought there must have been a secret POC ancestor but this has me thinking 🤔

My family was heavy into genealogy so I know we were traced back to Appalachia 5 generations back. My DNA came back 1% Bangladeshi, 1% sub Saharan African, 1% Native American & the rest British Isles, German, Finnish.

I find this incredibly interesting as a member of the Manitoba Métis nation in Canada. The red river Métis are a distinct indigenous group, born of a marriage between indigenous peoples and European fur trappers in the red river valley. We are people with our own language, foods, clothing, traditions, dance, and music. Our ancestry traces way back to this certain place and this certain time, not simply being of mixed heritage. Thanks for sharing this, it’s fascinating.
