the comic is basically just anti-stalin more than anything, the film chooses to conflate stalin with all communist ideology. as a stalin defender (he's not my favourite guy but he is deeply misunderstood,) both takes come off as a little unnuanced and a little too fanciful in their depictions of real people, but the comic book does a good job of framing Kal-El as both a good person AND a staunch communist

Animal farm does not criticize a system other than capitalism (farmers). Animal farm criticizes the Bolsheviks to Stalin, not the Soviets (workers) or communism/socialism. It criticizes the lack of communism and the simple change in management without improving the conditions of the people.

I never enjoyed the comic, so this review is music to my ears. The flaw I found in the comic is that it felt too surface level. I think a great character study of Superman was possible, but Red Son just missed the mark.

Mark Millar is such a bad writer, he writes pure shock value and his only halfway decent comics are his grant Morrison collaborations. It’s a miracle that Kick Ass movie turned out so good when the comic had unreadable writing and eye burning art, but it seems like Red Son doesn’t have the same escape from its source material. I will say tho, in the comic, Batman is pretty cool and isn’t as insane as you describe the movie version. The comic feels like a much worse version of Miracleman and that isn’t even a comic I love, so being a worse version is an embarrassing feat.

The comic is great as a character study of Superman and Lex. Its politics are a little muddy due to US propaganda, but Superman is still portrayed as an idealist and Lex as an amoral opportunist who hates Superman. Superman is a good-hearted but fundamentally misguided, his intentions twisted by the system he was brought up in. It has its issues (ha! comic pun) but I still think it's pretty solid. I haven't seen the film.

I just like the first half when red son superman is dropping bars and he looks really cool. when his childhood friend dies is when it completely leans into being anti communist propaganda which sucks.
