Redness can also look purple or darker than your usual skin, so watch for swelling, warmth and pain too (Cleveland Clinic). Weak immune system, diabetes, no spleen or advanced liver disease? Never wait on a bite that broke the skin (IDSA, MedlinePlus). You may need a tetanus shot if your last one was 5+ years ago or you're unsure (CDC). A healthy pet cat that bites should be watched for 10 days; a stray or unknown cat: ask a doctor or public health about rabies (CDC).
