100%. That plena… African drums, Taino maracas, Spanish lyrics = Puerto Rican. We are all three proudly.

I am so sick of people trying to apply American cultural context to the Latin Carribean. I’m the color of paper, but my great grandmother was black as black can be. Does that mean bomba is not mine to love, even though that’s what I grew up with? There is a difference between trying to understand cultural nuances and enforcing ideologies on a culture you’re not a part of. You said it perfectly - sounds like colonialism to me. But according to her, my opinion doesn’t matter because I’m a white Latina and she’s a black Panamanian so her opinion matters more than mine when it comes to MY culture. 🙄

Cumbia is very similar. Some people, especially those who aren't even Colombian, try to ignore or erase the Zenu, Wayuu and Archuaco influences within the style. Indigenous representation is just as important as Afro representation.

Being black and African are two different things. I’m proud of my African blood but my skin is far from black.

Once they start applying woke ideology I stop listening. Puerto Rico isn’t perfect by any means, but I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT RACISM until I moved to NYC.

I think she meant white washed in the way reggaeton got white washed to be honest. Makes no sense that all the biggest reggaeton stars out rn besides bad bunny are white Latinos from Mexico, Medellin, and Chile

I’m extra pasty white but have more than 30% African and 23% Taino ancestry. it’s wild to think that in some people eyes I can’t represent my Afro Latin roots but my sister who is darker than me can. As Puerto Rican we are taught to remember all the traditions. Taino/ Afrain and Spanish/Portuguese.

I’m blk, but my found family is boriqua. Though I said “found family” I normally say adoptive, because my proudest moment was when my brothers mother referred to me as his brother to her new husband. One thing my brother always recognizes even though he’s can easily pass for white… well with a little confusion . lol but always puts forth and represents both sides. So though I’m on the outside. I say thank you 🙏🏽 and all the best cousin. Keep it up .
