No it’s a terrible idea. The care of a pet can be expensive along with vet care. It’s very wrong to give a child a random pet without parental permission. If they can’t afford to do Christmas for their child and is using angel tree it’s very unlikely that the family can afford to keep a cat. It’s going to break the child’s heart when the cat “runs away”.

there is also the fact that the kids may want it, but do the parents know and agree? what was the service dog for? mobility, seizures, etc? would the cat not cause risk ie wrapping around legs on an unsteady person.
plus, can the family afford to keep the cat up to date with vet fees, food etc?
