Let's talk about saunas. Many believe that all saunas are created equal, and that’s not true. The most effective sauna type by longevity standards is a dry Finnish high-heat sauna. The majority of scientific evidence supports temperature ranges of 176-212 F (79.4-100 C) in the dry Finnish category. Now here’s what the dry Finnish sauna is actually doing, and why I use it. First, your heart. Heat makes it work like light cardio. Your heart rate climbs, your blood vessels dilate. In a study of over 2,000 men followed for 20 years, the ones using a sauna four to seven times a week had a 50% lower rate of fatal heart disease and a 40% lower risk of dying from any cause. This is an association, not proof, but it's a strong one. Second. Heat shock proteins. When you heat your body up, it flips these proteins on, and they go to repair damaged cells, protect your mitochondria, and clean out the cellular junk. That's your body's own repair crew, switched on by heat. Third, recovery. Better blood flow, less muscle soreness, lower blood pressure, and a nervous system that finally drops out of fight-or-flight. Why all these health benefits? The driver is core body temperature which needs to be elevated significantly above baseline to render effects. Studies have used a rectal temperature of 101.3-102.2 F (38.5-39 C) as thresholds to note systemic benefit. Infrared and steam saunas just don’t reach that level of heat intensity. They have other benefits. Keep in mind that the major sauna research, mainly Dr. Jari Laukkanen's Finnish cohort studies, used traditional Finnish dry saunas at 174°F (79°C), with humidity around 10-20% and a session length of 15-20 minutes. BONUS, sweat! Massive amounts of sweat. Remember sweat is part of a three-part detox system that your body has from birth. There’s no need for juice cleanses or detox pills when you sauna regularly. Aim for a few sessions a week to start. Build up to 15-20 min per session. And then aim for 4-7 sessions per week, ideally. And drink your water WITH electrolytes! #sauna #longevity #hearthealth #health
