@dr.emily.nutrition: THE ONE YOU’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR: COLLAGEN CHAT (Girl Science Edition) 🩷 First up, collagen is important. It’s what keeps your skin bouncy, joints cushioned, and tissues strong. Your body makes collagen, but rom your mid-20s, that production starts to dip – and drops faster post-menopause thanks to hormonal changes. DO YOU NEED TO TAKE A COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENT? Collagen supplements don’t “top up” your collagen directly. They’re broken down into small peptides that signal your body to make more, but only if your body’s in the right state to respond. That generally comes from you sleeping well, eating a balanced diet with enough protein and managing your stress, Without those foundations, the signal’s weak – and your collagen powder probably won’t do much. Where collagen actually delivers: 💞Joints: Hydrolysed or type II collagen can help reduce joint pain and slow cartilage breakdown (especially if osteoarthritis runs in your family). 🌟Skin: Evidence is mixed. High-quality, independent studies show minimal benefit for elasticity or hydration. 💅Hair & nails: Not much science here yet. Takehome message: collagen can support you, but it’s not a miracle. Focus on your foundations first – balanced nutrition, sleep, and stress management – and collagen becomes the cherry on top, not the whole sundae 🍒 #collagen #collagenforwomen #girlscience #womenshealth #hormonehealth

I have lupus, so I lack cartilage around finger knuckles that attach to my hand, but hydrolyzed collagen powder (plus vitamin C!) has eliminated my hand pain. But it has to be the multi kind that has something like 5 different types of collagen. The "beauty" ones don't help. Incidentally, my husband noticed a difference with my jowels, so there's that

Collagen gives me the runs. If I take any at all, it’s minuscule. Otherwise, I’m in the bathroom.

@Kristina - Nutrition Coach: Fellow nutritionist here. Totally agree on healthy food and lifestyle as a foundation. However, I looked at that meta analysis claiming results are not supported by quality studies. 1. Most studies are industry funded but that doesn’t mean they’re automatically biased. 2. Some of the independent studies supported the claim that it improves skin quality. 3. I’m taking high-quality collagen for decades and it does help. Even my 94 year old dad takes it because it’s helping him with dry skin.

Would love to know if it positively affects gut micro-biome - I have rosacea and notice SUCH a difference in flare ups since I started taking a collagen supplement- I wonder if it positively affects my gut which, in turn, positively affects my skin

Genuine existential doubt… I know you touched a bit on it but how can even collagen intake work? Because collagen is a protein so if you ingest it, it will just be broken into amino acids as every protein does when you eat it (just like protein in a steak for example) and then your body uses them for whatever it wants to use… no guarantee that it will be to produce more collagen I guess… 😅

THANK YOU!! 🙌🏻 I’ve worked in a supplement health food store for over 10 years and collagen was always the hardest one for me to sell because I didn’t believe in it (for majority of people buying it) and people would always ask what I think about it and I can’t lie. I can’t sell or suggest something I don’t believe is working for people. And this was also from getting feedback from people after they had been taking it for months going “I don’t know if I’ve noticed any difference?” 🤪

I’ve read a few studies on this and noticed that most compared “with collagen” to “without” collagen. If collagen is absorbed as a protein/AAs, then why are they not comparing it to the same quantity of protein but perhaps from a different source as a positive control? Of course the diet higher in protein (“with collagen”) is going to be better for joints than the diet lower in protein (“without collagen”). Have you seen any studies controlling for this?
