For the last 3 ish years, I’ve noticed my health just wasn’t where it should be. I was constantly fatigued, struggling with brain fog, and a few other health concerns that I won’t mention, cause personal. I know my body and deep down I knew something was off, but I kept convincing myself I was fine. I would just add more supplements and tried removing/adding certain foods, but nothing really changed. I got blood tests done, and the only thing that came up was iron deficiency. I invested in high quality iron and paired it with vitamin C for absorption, but even then I didn’t feel any big changes. As you can see from my page, I’ve always eaten a balanced, whole food plant-based diet, so it didn’t make sense to me. I would also occasionally have cravings for fish that kinda came out of nowhere. Since being vegan, I never really got any cravings for animal products, but I just thought it was normal as I didn’t go vegan cause I didn’t like the taste of fish, so just thought well cravings don’t mean anything. Around April, I suffered a jiu jitsu injury that just wasn’t healing, no matter what therapies or treatments I tried. I started acupuncture and spoke to the Chinese medicine doctor, she was asking me general health questions. As I was explaining my situation, she asked if I happened to be vegan. I was like ummm how did you know!? She explained that she’s seen vegan patients of 8+ years who often have very similar experiences to what I was describing. She suggested I introduce fish to my diet, but I was reluctant and brushed it off. Few months later, during my period, I had the most intense craving for sardines!? I was baffled cause when did I even last eat sardines before I was vegan?? But my body was screaming for them and that had neverrr happened before. When I looked them up and saw how nutrient packed they were, (literally superfoods), I got this intuitive feeling that this is what my body was needing. I sourced the most sustainable brand I had access to, and since then, I’ve mostly introduced sardines and wild caught salmon into my diet. And I know it’s not a coincidence that my health issues cleared up, my back injury started healing. Our bodies are constantly changing and I’m going to honour that. My diet is still 90% plant based and I will be starting to post some fish recipes. It’s been almost 3 months now and I have felt the healthiest I have in a long time.
