The thing is one day you're just being censored, the next you're being shipped to a reconversion camp because China is an authoritarian government. You don't live in a vacuum.

don't worry Leo. we're in a society where you can't say anything positive about China. there's absolutely no argument possible.

China has a lot of emphasis on the idea of harmony, which both brings physical safety but also heavy censorship against oppressed groups.

Every country has people who may not understand or accept homosexuality, and that’s normal to some extent. But in China, people generally won’t hurt you physically because of your sexual orientation. And especially in schools, any kind of bullying is taken very seriously and can lead to strict consequences nowadays. It’s always wrong to try to satisfy your own ideas by forcing others to accept your views or to recognise you in a certain way just because they’re different from you. Mutual respect matters in every single way.

one of the most famous people on Chinese TV is a trans woman. so I'm unsure if censorship is the right word.

Dw man people in the west refuse to hear anything that challenges their previous views on China. Nuance is important and many people miss that 😑

Violence against gay people is definitely lower than in the U.S., but it’s not nonexistent. For example, there was that recent case in Zhengzhou People’s Park where a gay person was beaten up. And public acceptance is nowhere near the same level.
