One major tradition traces its foundation to Prince Idu, the eldest son of Oba Eweka I, who became Oba N’Ugu after a succession dispute in Benin. The nine communities traditionally identified as direct descendants of Oba N’Ugu are: 1. Umoghumwun N’Okhua 2. Umoghumwun N’Uzuagbo 3. Ogba 4. Evboesi 5. Oben 6. Ebazogbe N’Ugu 7. Ikobi 8. Urhehue 9. Ologbo (Edo World⁠) Ugu later came under the expanding authority of the Benin Obas, particularly during the period of Benin’s wars of unification.
